East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Almquist, Elmer Hugo, 1893-1940

Almquist, a native of Nebraska, graduated from West Point in 1917. After serving as an artillery officer at various posts in Germany and the United States, he was assigned to command the R.0.T.C. unit at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, in 1934.
